Students have begun to arrive early and I am out of time. For now I'll just turn off the broadcast and come back to it when I can. I've looked on both sides of the wall at both ends of the hallway. I've been up in the ceiling down here, and upstairs. But it hasn't made the search any easier.Īnd in spite of the fact that the Wi-Fi Analyzer app is getting half-way to the green in one specific spot (move any direction and it goes lower) I can't find it. I know which ports its not on, and I know where those ones go. So once in that tube I can't follow the line anymore. I'm currently hoping none of these lines ever needs to be replaced. Each line or couple of lines going into a box imbedded in the wall with the wires coming through this tube. This tube then feeds a bunch of smaller tubes between floors. It starts out on a rack with 200 other lines then enters a big metal tube. Is there any sort of pinging device or similar that will help to narrow it down to a certain room?Īs I said originally, I know the port. We're installing a new wireless system and it's annoying to have that old AP still spouting out its SSID. However, looking in all of the rooms, at all of the ports, and in the ceiling I can't find the darn thing. Using my Tablet and the Wi-Fi Analyzer app, as well as Miraki WiFi Stumbler I have narrowed it down to my hallway. I managed to locate the switch port that it's plugged into, however switch ports don't help as we don't have a map of where each port goes.

Not that it would matter, since the physical look of the building and arrangement of the rooms has changed several times since the network's original implementation.

Prior to my arrival on campus there was no real network map telling us where each port on each switch was placed. And I've managed to physically locate 33 of them. I now have IPs and MAC addresses for all of the ones that I've found. I used our DHCP to find all of the APs I could (some didn't broadcast SSIDs). I say estimated because we can't find them all. On campus, between our six buildings, we have an estimated 36 APs. I can either chalk that up to the situation itself, or my lack of understanding. I've read a few similar topics on this question but didn't find an answer that really helped.
